The 8th Maine Infantry Regiment was mustered in on Sept. 7, 1861. Company E was organized at New Portland, Maine, and was under the command of Capt. Thomas Hutchins with Charles B. Knapp becoming captain in July 1863. The regiment landed in Hilton Head, S.C., in November 1861 and was employed there and in Jacksonville, Fla. until the spring of 1864.
